The third conference, SIAL 3, entitled “Speciation in ancient lakes: their geological development and natural history” took place in Irkutsk (Russia) from 2–7 September, 2002. Naturally, the focus of that conference was the oldest and arguably most famous of the ancient lakes—Lake Baikal. The conference proceedings were published in two special issues (Ivanov et al., 2003; Coulter et al., 2006), adding to the reputation of Lake Baikal as one of the best-studied ancient lakes in the world.
